Shirazi: where every day is prom

I’ve been holding out on you guys by not sharing the funniest part of life in Shirazi. Before we arrived in Shirazi we were told we would have to cover up. No visible knees or shoulders, with our heads covered except when we were in our own homes. We were told our families would most likely provide us with outfits to ensure that we were appropriate.

But all this advance information could not prepare me for the outfit that was put into my hands on the first day of Swahili classes.

Yep, I wore that all day. Mama got style. Apparently our Shirazi mothers have collections of outfits that they save for special occasions: weddings, traveling, and adopted white children like me.

Some days were more normal than others

I made the prom picture almost every day :) More facebook pictures should be up soon, and I'll try to nab some of the best ones of the group.

While Mama had a penchant for pink, my personal favorite was this little number:

The style is Popobawa, from Zanzibar (I looked up the word, Swahili for bat wing). I felt like an African queen for a day. I think the fam liked it too; they said it was my color.
